There are many state and federal resources available, but often they will not provide the full range of support required to provide optimum health and social care for a disabled child. Even if you have private health insurance you still will not be covered for all of your child’s needs. That is why it is important to determine the cause of your child’s condition.
What caused my child’s cerebral palsy?
Typically if you ask you pediatrician or treating specialist they will say they don’t know the cause or its difficult to determine. However, with a comprehensive medical review you can usually pinpoint the reason.
Many times the cause is linked to medical issues that arose during pregnancy or delivery. For example, if a doctor fails to diagnose a placental rupture or recognize fetal distress your baby could be deprived of sufficient oxygen resulting in brain damage.
In most states if the doctor or hospital caused or contributed to your child’s condition they can be responsible for the extra health and social costs involved in raising a child with cerebral palsy. This is particularly important when a child is unlikely to develop the ability to live independently. In the event that you are not there to care for your child when they are older, then it is comforting to know there is a fund in place to provide for their daily needs.
